Biography

Chow Yun-Fat, born 18th May 1955 on Lamma Iceland, near Hong Kong. He began his career by joining TVB in 1973. It was not until the eighties achieved some success that he and popularity as a gangster Hui Man Keung in the popular series "Shanghai Beach. Chow his first movie in 1976-a strip of category III, Title massage girls, but his film career had a shaky start as it was difficult to find roles that suited him. His first critical success factors was probably with The Story of Woo Viet (1981), directed by Ann Hui. The critically-acclaimed drama Chow was a chance to show his action, and he showed an effective ability to convey powerful emotion and feeling. A few years followed, where Chow's career seemed lost, it was during this time suffered that he had a brief, failed marriage with Candice Yu On-On, another TV star.

In 1985, Chow received awards for Best Actor at the Taiwan Golden Horse Film Awards and the Asia-Pacific Film Festival for director Leung Po-Chi's Hong Kong 1941. Chow seemed suited to this kind of dramatic roles, a talent that director John Woo recognized when casting the heroic bloodshed-1986 film A Better Tomorrow. The film was Chow's breakthrough film, brought an entire genre of movies and made Copycat bankable stars from both Chow and Woo. Chow's character Mark Gor was an action role, but Chow administered by his "act" to infuse every action and gesture with raw emotions. He continued, probably the biggest star in Hong Kong, and was rewarded with nods for Best Actor in the Hong Kong Film Awards for a better future (1986), City on Fire (1987) and All About Ah Long (1990). He went on a star in a variety of Hong Kong films included the action, drama and comedy, and some of his most important works are Ringo Lam's Prison on Fire (1987), Wong Jing's God of Gamblers (1989) and John Woo's The Killer (1989).

In 1992, Chow starred in John Woo's Hard Boiled, marked their last great cooperation and Chow's calling card to Hollywood. Chow felt he had everyone what he could in Hong Kong cinema, and that his roles were always those in which he played the appropriate COP / killer. After filming locations Peace Hotel (1995), Chow has a two-year break from films to learn English, whereupon he moved to America to try his hand in the American film stars.

Chow Yun-Fat is known to American audiences as the charismatic, matchstick-chewing hero of John Woo action films such as A Better Tomorrow (1987), The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992). The star of more than 70 films, Chow gained international fame in both comedy and drama before it in connection with what is often referred to as "heroic bloodshed" films. In 2000 he became an international film star to appear with Michelle Yeoh in Ang Lee's blockbuster hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Since he has Bulletproof Monk (2003), Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007, with Johnny Depp).




Personal Life


Chow has married twice. First to Candice Yu (Chinese:余安安; Pinyin: Yú Ānan) in 1983, was an actress from Asia Television Ltd., TVB-rivals. But the marriage did not last long and the two broke up after nine months. Chow has since married Singaporean Jasmine Tan (simplified Chinese:陈萫莲; traditional Chinese:陈荟莲; Pinyin: Chén huilián) in 1986. Tan reportedly had a miscarriage during pregnancy and the two have no children. However, Chow Yun Fat has a godchild, Celine Ng, the former child model for Chickeeduck and other various companies.
